What is an MCP server
An MCP (Model Context Protocol) server is a program that exposes tools and data to an AI assistant through a common protocol: the assistant asks it for actions — looking up, creating, or updating information — and the server runs them against the external service, like a CRM, a calendar, or a database. Instead of copying and pasting data between apps, the assistant works directly with the connected tool, and each server declares what it can do before being used.
To use an MCP server, add its configuration to the client you use — for example, your AI chat app or your coding tool — following the server repository's instructions. Most servers in this store are open source: you can review their code, permissions, and activity before connecting them, and remove the connection when you no longer need it.

Official servers are maintained by the service itself; community servers are maintained by the community, so it is worth checking their maintenance and permissions more carefully. Before connecting a server
Check three things: which permissions it asks for (read, write, or both), whether it stores credentials on your machine or on an external server, and whether its repository shows recent activity. Start with read-only permissions when the server offers them, test with sample data, and expand permissions only once the flow already works. If a server stops being maintained, look for a replacement in the MCP list before relying on it in a daily flow.
