FTMO Review 2026: The Prop Firm Benchmark, Rules First

By Dr. Aris Thorne β€’ Beginner β€’ 6 min read β€’ Updated 2026-09-15

What You Will Master in This Tutorial

  • Set up Python 3.12+ and write clean, readable, PEP 8-compliant code.
  • Work with fundamental data structures: Lists, Dictionaries, Sets, and Tuples.
  • Control program execution flow with conditionals, loops, and list comprehensions.
  • Encapsulate logic into reusable functions with type hints and default arguments.
  • Understand Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) in Python: Classes, Methods, and Inheritance.
  • Test and execute your scripts interactively using the Online Code Playground.

FTMO is the best-known proprietary trading firm in the world: pay for a Challenge, prove you can hit a profit target inside strict loss limits, pass a Verification step, and you trade an FTMO Account keeping 80–90% of the profits. Founded in Prague in 2015, it built its reputation on actually paying traders, at scale, for years. That reputation does not change the underlying math: most challengers fail, the fee is non-refundable once you trade, and nothing in this review is financial advice.

What FTMO is (and is not)

FTMO sells an evaluation, not a job and not an investment. Funded traders trade with simulated capital in a demo environment that mirrors real market conditions, and FTMO pays rewards from its own funds according to the contract. It is not a broker: you cannot deposit and trade your own money with FTMO, and the "capital" figures ($10,000 to $200,000 per account) describe your simulated balance and risk budget, not cash in an account with your name on it. What FTMO genuinely offers is leverage on skill: pass its exam and a small fee becomes access to payouts sized like a professional account.

Key features

  • Two challenge formats: the classic 2-Step (Challenge + Verification) and a 1-Step variant with a single phase and different loss rules. Both come in Normal and more aggressive variants with different profit targets.
  • The rules that define everything (2-Step, Normal): profit target ~10% in the Challenge and ~5% in Verification; maximum daily loss 5%; maximum overall loss 10%. Breach either loss limit once and the account is gone, at any profit level.
  • No time limit: the old 30-day pressure was removed β€” you can take as long as you need, which rewards patience and punishes nobody for waiting for their setup.
  • Profit split 80%, rising to 90% under the Scaling Plan, which also grows your account balance (up to $2,000,000 across scaled accounts) when you are consistently profitable over months.
  • Platforms and instruments: MetaTrader 4/5, cTrader and DXtrade; forex, indices, commodities, stocks and crypto.
  • Free trial and free repeats: a demo trial mirrors the challenge, and under conditions a failed Challenge that ended in profit without rule breaches can be retaken free.
  • Trader tooling: account analysis, a trading journal app and performance statistics designed to build the discipline the rules demand.

How to get started step by step

  1. Run the free trial first with the exact account size you plan to buy. Most people discover in the trial that their normal position sizing breaches the 5% daily loss rule within two bad days.
  2. Recalculate your risk per trade for prop rules: with a 10% total loss budget, professionals typically risk 0.25–0.5% per trade. If your strategy needs 2% risk per trade to "work", it does not work here.
  3. Buy the smallest serious account ($10k–$25k) and treat the fee as a sunk education cost from day one.
  4. Trade phase 1 like the Verification depends on it β€” because it does. Reach the target with minimum drama: the same account must then survive a second phase with identical loss limits.
  5. On the funded account, withdraw your first reward early. It confirms the payout process (and the fee effectively comes back to you), and trading gets psychologically easier afterwards.
  6. Scale slowly. The Scaling Plan rewards four-month consistency, not one heroic month.

Systematic traders: check FTMO's automation rules before connecting anything β€” expert advisors are permitted within limits, but strategies like martingale/grid gambling violate the spirit and often the letter of the terms. Pricing and fees (snapshot β€” verify on the official site)

Fees are one-time and scale with account size. As a snapshot: the classic 2-Step Challenge runs roughly €155 for $10k, €345 for $25k, €540 for $50k, €1,080 for $100k and €2,160 for $200k (1-Step pricing differs). The fee is refunded with your first profit split payment on the funded account β€” if you get there, which most challengers do not. Payment is by card or crypto. There are no monthly platform fees on the standard challenges.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • The longest, most credible payout track record in the retail prop industry.
  • No time limit and a genuine free trial β€” the rules exam is tough but fair and knowable in advance.
  • Scaling Plan to $2M with a 90% split is a real career path for consistent traders.
  • Fee refunded on first payout; strong educational tooling.

Cons

  • Fees are higher than younger rivals; the 5% daily / 10% total loss cage is unforgiving of normal strategy drawdowns.
  • Funded trading is simulated β€” payouts depend on the firm's continued solvency and terms.
  • Most buyers lose their fee. The model profits from evaluations, not only from trader success.
  • Restrictions on news trading, holding and certain strategies apply on some account types.

The challenge math, honestly

Put the 2-Step Normal numbers on a $100,000 account and look at what they demand: the profit target is $10,000, the maximum total loss is $10,000, and the maximum daily loss is $5,000. Risking 0.5% ($500) per trade, you need a net +20R to pass phase 1 β€” with a strategy that wins half its trades at 1.5R average, that is a campaign of many dozens of disciplined trades, not a hot week. Risking 2% per trade shortens the campaign but means five consecutive losses β€” an ordinary event for most strategies β€” puts you within one trade of breaching the total limit. This is why professionals describe prop challenges as a risk-management exam with a trading component, and why the winning adjustment is almost always smaller positions, not better predictions.

Best for β€” and alternatives

FTMO is best for already-profitable traders with modest drawdowns who want the most established firm and a scaling path, and who accept paying a premium for that track record. For cheaper entries and more model variety (including futures challenges), compare FundedNext. If you prefer trading your own money with no exam and no rules cage, start small on a low-fee exchange like MEXC or Bitget. In every case, the prerequisite is identical: a strategy that has already survived your own testing β€” our trading bot tutorial covers how to test one.

Verdict: FTMO is the firm against which the rest of the industry is measured, and its rules β€” while strict β€” are published, stable and survivable by genuinely disciplined traders. The buying decision should be boring: run the free trial with your exact strategy and size, and only pay if your trial equity curve stayed comfortably inside the loss limits with room to spare. If the trial felt like a coin flip, the paid challenge will feel the same, at €155 and up per flip.

Risk reminder: budget any challenge fee as money spent, not invested. Most challengers fail, funded accounts end on a single rule breach, and rewards are never guaranteed. Nothing here is financial advice.
